The Most Surprising Place I Installed LED Strips (And It Looks Amazing)
The best LED strip installation I've done wasn't under cabinets or behind a TV — it was inside a bookshelf. I routed an addressable strip along the front edge of each shelf, hidden by a small wooden lip. The effect at night is stunning: each shelf glows with a different color, and the books cast soft shadows. It cost $40 in materials and took an afternoon. LED strips are versatile enough to work in almost any space if you think about where light is missing. Here are the applications I've tested and which strips work best for each.
Is Under-Cabinet LED Strip Lighting Worth It for Kitchens?
Yes, this is the single most impactful LED strip installation. I installed a 24V RGBW strip under my upper cabinets — 3000K for cooking, color accent for parties. The difference in kitchen usability was immediate. No more chopping vegetables in my own shadow. Cost: $30 for the strip, $15 for the power supply, $20 for an aluminum channel. Installation time: 2 hours. If you only do one LED strip project, make it under-cabinet kitchen lighting. For more on kitchen-specific requirements, see my Kitchen Lighting guide.
What's the Best LED Strip for TV Backlighting (Bias Lighting)?
Addressable strips are best for TV backlighting because they can create effects that follow the on-screen action. I use a 2-meter WS2812B addressable strip behind my 55-inch TV, controlled by WLED on an ESP32. The bias lighting reduces eye strain by 56% according to studies — the ambient light behind the screen reduces the contrast between the bright screen and dark wall. For a simpler setup, USB-powered RGB strips work but you lose addressable effects. Stick the strip to the back edge of the TV, facing the wall. Don't let the strip be visible from the front — it should create a glow, not a direct light.
Can LED Strips Work Outdoors?
Yes, but only with IP65 (water-resistant) or IP67 (waterproof) rated strips. Standard IP20 indoor strips will die within weeks outdoors from moisture. I use IP65 RGBW strips on my covered patio — they've survived rain and humidity for 18 months without issues. Outdoor installations also need a waterproof power supply enclosure and sealed connections. I use silicone-filled wire nuts for outdoor strip connections. Gel-filled heat shrink tubes also work. Keep the connections off the ground and protected from direct rain. My installation guide covers outdoor mounting in detail.
What About Bedroom and Living Room LED Strip Ideas?
Bedroom ceiling coves are my favorite application. Install a warm white (2700K) strip in a cove or behind a valance — the indirect light creates a soft ambient glow perfect for winding down. Living room accent walls get addressable strips behind the TV and behind a sofa. I also use LED strips inside glass cabinets, under bed frames (motion-activated night lighting), and along staircases (safety lighting). The key to a professional look is always using an aluminum channel with a diffuser — bare strips look cheap and have visible LED hotspots. See my LED Strip hub for recommendations on channels and diffusers.
