Begin with the task
Start with what the light must do. It may support reading, cooking, grooming, desk work, or safe movement. Write that task down. Next, note the existing fixture. Note the bulb base too. Include the switch or dimmer. Then describe what fails now. Is the room dim? Is glare the problem? Is the color uneven? This short note makes the next choice clear.

Keep brightness and color separate
Lumens describe rated light output. They do not promise equal light on every surface. Kelvin describes how warm or cool white light appears. CRI helps describe color appearance. Beam angle helps describe where light lands. These labels answer different questions.
Raise brightness only after checking placement. More output can leave a worktop bright and the surrounding room dark. A cooler color does not fix poor placement. It may also feel wrong in the room. Change one variable at a time. First move or add light at the task. Then adjust brightness. Then adjust color and dimming.
Check fit before efficiency
LED products can lower energy use in many homes. The fixture still sets the limits. Check the base and clearances. Check whether the bulb is rated for an enclosed fixture. Check damp or wet location guidance. Check the dimmable label. Then check the control compatibility list.
Use the product instructions for any fixture with wiring work. Do the same for damaged sockets. Stop if there is water exposure. Stop if ratings are unclear. Use a qualified electrician when the work goes beyond a normal bulb replacement.
Smart products need the same care. A smart bulb needs steady power. It may be a poor fit for a switch that is often turned off. A smart dimmer may need a neutral conductor. It may also need a supported load. Keep the existing control method in the decision.
Keep a small lighting record
For each room, record the fixture and bulb base. Record the bulb shape too. Add the rated output and color label. Note the switch or dimmer. Save the model number and replacement date. This takes little time. It makes a later replacement much easier.
Use a room guide when placement is the main problem. Kitchens, mirrors, desks, stairs, closets, and paths need different approaches. They have different glare and shadow risks.
