Color Temperature (Kelvin): Warm to Cool

Kelvin measures the color appearance of light, from warm yellow (2200K) to cool blue-white (6500K). It's determined by the phosphor coating inside the LED, not the LED chip itself.

Practical Kelvin guide: – 2200K-2700K: Warm white. Candlelight to traditional incandescent feel. Best for bedrooms, living rooms, dining areas. CRI measures how accurately a light source reveals colors compared to natural sunlight. Sunlight = CRI 100 (perfect). Most quality LEDs = CRI 80-95. Budget LEDs = CRI 60-75.

Why CRI matters: at CRI 80, reds look slightly muted, greens appear less vibrant, and skin tones take on a yellowish cast. At CRI 90+, colors look natural and rich. The difference is immediately obvious when you compare the same room lit by an 80-CRI bulb versus a 95-CRI bulb.

Beam Angle: Narrow Spot to Wide Flood

Beam angle determines how concentrated or spread out the light is. Measured in degrees, it defines the cone within which 90% of the light falls.

Common beam angles and applications: – 15-24 degrees: Spot. Accent lighting, artwork illumination, architectural highlights. PAR30 and PAR38 formats. – 30-40 degrees: Medium flood. Trust lumens, not wattage equivalents. Buy CRI 90+ for any surface where you evaluate colors (kitchen counters, bathroom mirrors, clothing selection). Match beam angle to fixture type — this single specification gets overlooked more than any other and causes the most lighting dissatisfaction. And always replace old dimmer switches with LED-rated models before complaining about flickering bulbs; 90% of “flickering LED” problems are actually dimmer incompatibility.
