LED Drivers: Read the Output Type, Load, and Heat Limits

Match an LED driver to the exact light system, not just the connector

An LED driver or power supply belongs to a specific type of light system. Before replacing one, read the markings on the existing unit and the documentation for the light it serves. A connector that fits does not prove that the output is appropriate.

Take a clear photo first. Read one line at a time. Keep the old part with the new one as you compare. This makes it easier to spot a mismatch before a part is installed.

Read the output information first

Record the input statement, output type, voltage or current information, and any listed load range. Then compare those details with the fixture, strip, or module instructions. Do not infer a match from wattage labels alone or from a similar-looking unit.

For a strip system, use the LED strip buying guide to keep voltage, length, controller, and power decisions together.

Plan for heat and service access

Drivers and power supplies need the conditions described in their instructions. Do not seal a unit behind permanent trim without a service path. Look at ventilation, mounting surface, cable strain, and the route needed for a later replacement.

If the unit is hot, damaged, wet, or makes unusual noise, stop using it and follow the product guidance. A general article cannot determine whether an electrical component is safe to repair.

Keep the controller in the same system check

A controller, dimmer, or smart control can change the compatibility picture. Record each component before replacing one part. Test a documented configuration before final mounting, and do not mix unverified parts while troubleshooting.

The LED strip controllers guide provides the next decision path for control behavior.

Stop before mains work

Turn off power before normal service. Stop for damaged cable, exposed conductors, uncertain ratings, or work that needs a wiring change. Use a qualified electrician when the work exceeds the product instructions and normal replacement.

Do not guess at a driver. Do not force a plug. A short check can save a failed strip and a hard repair.
